Dust mites, bed bugs and mold in a mattress: the facts
Dust mites live in warm, humid, soft surfaces, bed bugs are a pest-control problem and mold grows where a mattress stays damp. WATERFALL's mattress cleaning takes dirt and moisture out of the fabric, and we clean a mattress after mold, a leak or pests; a mattress is priced per mattress, any size, see the prices page. WATERFALL cleans mattresses at your home for $120: call (747) 214-6199.

What are dust mites?
Dust mites are microscopic creatures related to spiders that feed on the skin flakes people shed. They are too small to see without magnification, and they live in bedding, mattresses, upholstered furniture and carpet, where it is warm and humid.
Where do dust mites live?
Wherever skin flakes collect in warm, humid, soft surfaces: mattresses, pillows, bedding, sofas, carpet and rugs. They are common in homes, and their presence does not mean a home is dirty.
How can I tell if my room has dust mites?
Not by looking: dust mites are too small to see, and there is no sign on a mattress, a couch or a carpet. The clue is the room: they need humidity, so a hygrometer reading that stays above the EPA's range in the list below means conditions they like. The routine in that list does not depend on knowing.
What are the ways to kill or reduce dust mites?
Washing bedding hot, covering the mattress, lowering humidity and vacuuming reduce them; the measures people use, from the EPA's guidance and common practice, are below.
- wash bedding often, in the hottest water the label allows
- cover the mattress and pillows with zippered covers
- keep the air indoors dry; the EPA puts the ideal indoor humidity at 30 to 50 percent
- vacuum the mattress, the couch and the carpet regularly
- reduce soft clutter in the bedroom
Does steam cleaning kill dust mites?
Steam can kill the mites it reaches, but in a mattress or a couch it reaches only the top layers, and a clothes steamer only touches the surface. Hot-water extraction, which is what WATERFALL does, takes dirt and moisture out of the fabric. The measures in the list above (zippered covers, hot-washed bedding, low humidity and vacuuming) work without steam.
Does mattress cleaning remove dust mites?
It is not a mite treatment. Cleaning takes dust, dirt, sweat residue and loose debris out of the fabric; for a health question, ask your doctor, and the EPA's page on biological pollutants is linked below.
Does spraying Lysol on a mattress do anything for dust mites?
Only on the surface it wets: a spray reaches the top of the mattress, not the layers below. A household spray, Lysol included, is labeled for what it is made to do and where it may be used, so read the label before it goes on a mattress, keep the room aired and never soak the bed. The measures in the list above are what keep mites down.
How do you get rid of dust mites in a couch?
With slow, regular vacuuming and a dry room. Vacuum the cushions, the seams and under the cushions with an upholstery tool, wash removable covers as their labels allow, keep the room's humidity in the EPA's range in the list above and vacuum the rugs nearby too. A fabric furniture cleaning takes the embedded dirt out of the fabric; let the couch dry fully afterwards.
How do you stop dust mites coming back to upholstered furniture?
You cannot stop them for good, because they are common in homes. Regular vacuuming, low humidity, washing covers and an occasional cleaning keep the buildup of skin flakes and dirt down, and that buildup is what they feed on.
Do steam cleaners kill bed bugs in a couch?
Steam can kill the bed bugs and eggs it reaches, but only where it reaches, so it rarely ends an infestation alone. Pest-control guidance is to use a steamer with a wide nozzle rather than a narrow jet that blows bugs away, to move slowly along the seams, folds, underside and frame joints, and to let the couch dry fully; steam leaves no protection behind. WATERFALL cleans the couch but does not treat bed bugs; if you think you have them, call a pest control company, and the EPA's page below explains what to look for.
How do you get rid of bed bugs in a couch?
Call a pest control company, and do not move the couch to another room before you do, because that spreads them. Cleaning the fabric is not a treatment for bed bugs, and we do not offer one; once the pest control is done, we can clean the couch or mattress.
There is black mold on my mattress: can it be cleaned?
Usually not fully, and WATERFALL does not promise to take all of it out. Mold grows into foam, fabric and padding, and the EPA's guidance is that mold in a soft, porous material is hard to clean out fully, so a mattress with visible mold is normally replaced. The EPA's mold page below gives the details.
What to do:
- stop sleeping on it, and do not brush, shake or vacuum it indoors
- wear gloves and a mask when you move it, wrap it in plastic and follow your city's rules for bulky items
- wash the bedding as its labels say, and wipe and dry the bed frame and the floor under it
- find the moisture: a leak, condensation or a solid base with no airflow
- keep the room's humidity in the EPA's range in the list above
- if mold covers a large area of the room, get advice from a mold professional before you clean it
Questions and answers
Can you get mold out of a mattress?
Usually not: mold grows into the foam and padding, and a mattress with visible mold is normally replaced. WATERFALL cleans mattresses after mold or a leak: text a photo and we tell you what we expect.
Can you clean a moldy mattress?
In most cases no: the EPA's guidance is that mold in a soft, porous material is hard to clean out fully. Fix the moisture first; the EPA's mold page is linked on this page.
How to remove mold from a mattress?
Fix the moisture first, then wrap the mattress in plastic before you carry it out, because mold in soft, porous material is hard to clean out fully. Wash the bedding and wipe and dry the bed frame and the floor under it.
Do dust mites mean my home is dirty?
No. They are common in homes, and their presence does not mean a home is dirty.
Is bed bug treatment part of mattress cleaning?
No. We do not treat bed bugs, and cleaning is not a treatment. If you think you have them, call a pest control company before you move the furniture; WATERFALL cleans the mattress once that is dealt with.
Can I see dust mites on a mattress?
No, they are too small to see without magnification. There is no visible sign on a mattress.
How do I keep dust mites down in a mattress?
Wash bedding hot, cover the mattress, keep the room dry and vacuum. These are the measures in the EPA guidance linked on this page.
Can mattress cleaning remove dust mites?
Cleaning takes dust, dirt, sweat residue and loose debris out of the fabric. What keeps mites down is the routine on this page: zippered covers, hot-washed bedding, low humidity and vacuuming.
