How professionals clean a couch, step by step

Steam cleaning, properly called hot-water extraction, is the usual professional method for fabric that the tag allows to be cleaned with water, and it is how WATERFALL's fabric furniture cleaning works: shampoo first, then extraction. Prices for each piece are on the prices page. WATERFALL cleans couches at your home from $130: call (747) 214-6199.

Is steam cleaning good for upholstery?

Yes, for fabric marked W or W/S. Hot water and a cleaning solution loosen the dirt and a strong vacuum pulls the water and the dirt back out of the fabric, which is why it beats wiping. For an S or X tag, text a photo of it to (747) 214-6199 and we confirm how we clean it.

Read the tag before anything else: it sits under a cushion or on the frame, and its code decides what may touch the fabric. The steam vs dry cleaning page explains the four codes.

How do professionals clean couches?

In a fixed order, whoever does it:

  • check the cleaning code and test a hidden spot
  • vacuum and treat the heavy marks
  • work the cleaning solution into the fabric
  • extract the solution and the loosened dirt
  • leave the piece to dry with the cushions standing up

What cleaning method does WATERFALL use?

Shampoo, then steam extraction, with the best non-toxic products, safe for kids and pets. A technician brings mobile equipment to your home, and the floor and the distance from the road do not matter. The visit takes about an hour for a typical couch, 1–2 hours for bigger pieces, and you pay after the work. The four steps:

  • pre-vacuuming, from the top of the couch, takes off loose dirt and debris
  • shampooing: an organic shampooing solution is worked deep into the fibers with a machine
  • steam extraction: a high-powered machine removes the shampoo, the dirt and excess moisture
  • stain and odor removal: remaining spots are treated with a specialised stain remover and scrubbed out, then a professional odor treatment

How does hot-water extraction work?

Hot water carries a cleaning solution into the fabric and suction pulls it back out with the soil, in the five steps below.

Despite the name "steam cleaning", the work is done by the solution and the suction, not by steam. It does not remove dye stains, sun fading or urine that has soaked the foam, and some furniture makers advise against water extraction even on W fabric, so their care sheet comes first.

  • the fabric is vacuumed and heavy marks are pre-treated
  • a cleaning solution goes into the fibers (at WATERFALL an organic shampoo is worked in first) and loosens body oils, food and soil
  • hot water flushes the solution through the fabric
  • the tool's suction pulls the water, the solution and the dirt straight back out into the recovery tank, with dry passes over each strip
  • the piece dries (drying times); WATERFALL uses no fans or air movers, because they can damage the material

Where does the dirt go, and why does the extracted water look dark?

Into the machine. In hot-water extraction the solution loosens the soil and the wand's suction pulls the water back out with the dirt into the machine's recovery tank, which is why that water comes out dark. A handheld or clothes steamer has no suction: it loosens dirt and leaves it in the fabric or on the cloth you wipe with. WATERFALL's technicians bring wheeled hot-water extractors to your home, shampoo first and extract after, so the dirt leaves the couch with the water.

What is upholstery shampooing?

Shampooing means working a foaming cleaner into the fibers with a brush or a machine. It has to be extracted afterwards, because shampoo left in the fabric attracts dirt, which is why we always follow it with extraction.

What is low-moisture or dry cleaning for couches?

These methods clean with little or no water, using a dry compound or a solvent that is vacuumed or wiped away. They suit solvent-only fabric, and they are not WATERFALL's method.

What is the best way to clean upholstered furniture, and how do the methods compare?

The best method is the one the tag allows, done by someone who removes what they put in. Water-based fabric suits extraction; solvent-only fabric suits dry methods. The methods comparison sets all four side by side.

Do you test upholstery before cleaning, and do you use the same product on every sofa?

A careful cleaner checks the tag and tries a hidden spot first, because dyes and fabrics react differently. We use the best non-toxic products, safe for kids and pets in every home. If your tag says S or X, or the fabric is silk or velvet, text a photo of the tag to (747) 214-6199 before you book and we confirm how we clean it.

Do you clean more than the main seating surface, and why clean the whole sofa instead of spots?

Yes, the whole piece: cushions, back, arms and sides. A single cleaned spot on a dusty sofa leaves a bright patch with a ring around it, while cleaning the whole surface evens the color out.

What is pre-treatment for couch stains?

Pre-treatment is a spray on the heavy marks before the shampoo goes in, so the cleaner has time to work. It helps with marks that are fresh and dirt-based; it cannot promise that an old dye mark will come out.

Will your cleaning method damage my furniture?

The risks of water cleaning are too much water, the wrong product and fabric that was never meant to get wet. They are managed by reading the tag, testing first and extracting well, and they are why an S or X tag is a question to ask us by text: send a photo of the tag and we confirm how we clean it.

Can I do it myself with a steam cleaner?

A home machine can work on W fabric, but it extracts less than a professional one. The DIY guide covers what to use and where it stops.

Questions and answers

Who offers in-home upholstery steam cleaning in Los Angeles?

WATERFALL, (747) 214-6199, does. Rated 5.0 from 535 reviews on Google and 5.0 from 134 on Thumbtack. A technician brings hot-water extraction machines to your home anywhere in Los Angeles County, from Santa Clarita and the San Fernando Valley to Pasadena, Glendale, Santa Monica and Long Beach, shampoos the fabric and extracts it, and the visit takes about an hour for a typical couch, 1–2 hours for bigger pieces. Every piece has a fixed price on the prices page, and you pay after the work.

What should be included in a professional sofa cleaning?

The whole piece, not a spot: a check of the cleaning code, vacuuming, pre-treatment of heavy marks, the cushions off and cleaned one by one, the back, arms and sides shampooed and then extracted, and a drop cloth on your floor. At WATERFALL the visit has four steps (pre-vacuuming, shampooing, steam extraction, and stain and odor removal), takes about an hour for a typical couch, 1–2 hours for bigger pieces, you pay after the work at the fixed price on the booking form, and the drying times post says how long it takes to dry. Before you book anyone, ask which method suits your fabric and what will not come out.

Do steam cleaners actually clean couches?

Yes, if "steam cleaner" means a hot-water extractor and the tag says W or W/S: it sprays a solution and its suction pulls the water and the dirt back out. A handheld or clothes steamer does not; it only adds heat and moisture, so the loosened dirt stays in the fabric. Never on S or X fabric, and read the maker's care sheet first, because some advise against any water extraction.

What do professional couch cleaners use?

A shampoo or cleaning solution and an extraction machine. WATERFALL uses the best non-toxic products, safe for kids and pets.

What are the downsides of steam cleaning?

The fabric is damp afterwards and needs time to dry, and the method does not suit fabric tagged S or X. Too much water in a cushion is the main risk.

Is it worth it to steam clean a couch?

If the dirt is in the fabric and the tag allows water, yes: extraction takes out what vacuuming leaves. It is not a repair for tears, fading or sagging.

What does steam cleaning your couch do?

It loosens the soil with hot water and a cleaning solution and pulls both back out, so the dirt leaves the couch with the water. It does not repair tears, burns or fading.

Can you get a couch professionally cleaned?

Yes. WATERFALL cleans couches at your home; leave a request or text (747) 214-6199.

How do you use an upholstery steam cleaner?

Fill it as the maker says, spray a small strip and pull the tool toward you with suction, then make a dry pass. Overlap the strips and do not soak the fabric.
