Carpet ripples, fraying and water damage, explained

Ripples and buckles come from a loose installation, humidity or moisture and are fixed by power-stretching; a frayed edge is bound, overcast or secured under a strip; and water-damaged carpet can often be saved if the carpet, pad and floor are dried within 24 to 48 hours, the EPA's window. These are repairs and restoration, not cleaning: WATERFALL cleans carpet, and we do not stretch, patch, bind or repair it or restore water or sewage damage. For cleaning see carpet cleaning and the prices page. WATERFALL cleans carpet at your home from $60 a room: call (747) 214-6199.

How do you fix carpet ripples and wrinkles?

By re-stretching: an installer moves the furniture out and pulls the carpet tight with a power stretcher, which the Carpet and Rug Institute describes as stretching it "in all four directions", then re-secures it on the tack strip, sometimes in the next room or hallway as well. A knee kicker alone rarely holds. Before that, let a damp carpet dry and fix the moisture. Do not iron, glue or cut a ripple, because a cut carpet cannot be stretched back. We do not offer re-stretching.

Why does carpet buckle, and how do you fix carpet that is buckling?

Carpet buckles when it loses tension. If it appeared right after a wet cleaning, a spill or a humid spell, let it dry fully first: a ripple caused by moisture often lies flat again.

If it stays, find and fix any moisture source first, photograph it if the carpet is under warranty and call the installer or retailer; a buckle is also a trip hazard. The usual causes:

  • it was not power-stretched tight when installed;
  • high humidity, a leak or a damp slab let the backing relax;
  • the pad is the wrong type or has worn out;
  • heavy furniture was dragged across it;
  • the backing is separating with age.

Is your carpet shrinking?

A carpet pulling away from the wall is usually a carpet that was stretched too little or a backing that dried tight after being wet. An installer re-stretches it; the first step is to find out what made it move.

Can too much water damage a carpet?

Yes. Water that reaches the pad and subfloor can cause mold and a musty smell, brown or dye stains, a loosened or separated backing, shrinking and ripples, and damage to the pad, tack strip and floor. Wet latex backing is weak, so walking on a soaked carpet can make it separate. Remove the water and dry the carpet, pad and floor within 24 to 48 hours, the EPA's window; this is also why a careful cleaning uses as little water as the carpet needs and extracts it.

Can a carpet be saved after a water heater leak?

Often, yes: a water heater leak is usually clean water, and the EPA says to dry water-damaged materials within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold. Stop the leak, photograph the damage, extract the standing water, lift the carpet so the pad and subfloor can dry, and run fans and a dehumidifier. A pad that was soaked is usually replaced. If the carpet stayed wet longer than about two days, smells musty or the water was dirty, a water-damage restoration company decides, and the carpet is often replaced. We do not dry out or restore water damage, but we do clean carpet after a leak: once the carpet is dry and back down, text (747) 214-6199 if you want it cleaned.

How do you clean carpet after water damage?

If the water was clean and the carpet is dried within a day or two, remove the water, run fans and a dehumidifier and clean it once it is dry; WATERFALL cleans carpet after a leak, and drying out is not a service we offer. If it stays damp, the EPA's mold guidance applies, and a water-damage restoration company is the right call.

Can carpet be saved after a sewage overflow?

Usually not. Carpet and pad that sewage or floodwater has soaked are generally replaced, and a water-damage restoration company decides. Once the carpet that can be kept is dry, we clean it.

Why is my carpet fraying, and how do you stop it?

Because a loose strand or an unbound edge is unravelling. Cut a loose strand level with scissors, never pull it, and ask a carpet repairer to bind or seal an edge. We do not repair carpet.

How do you fix carpet edges?

It depends on the carpet. An area rug's edge is bound or overcast, which means stitched around the edge, by a rug repairer. A wall-to-wall edge at a doorway is secured under a transition strip, or trimmed and re-seamed by an installer. A dab of purpose-made carpet seam sealer can hold a very short frayed spot, but flooding the edge with ordinary glue stiffens and discolors it and makes the later repair harder. Keep the vacuum off a loose edge and never pull a strand. We do not repair, bind or patch carpet.

How do you patch a damaged carpet area?

By cutting out the damage and joining in a piece from a spare or hidden spot, such as a closet, with seaming tape. Matching the pile direction is what makes a patch hard to see; this is repairer's work and we do not offer it.

Questions and answers

How to fix carpet ripples?

Ripples are fixed by re-stretching the carpet, which is a repair trade. We do not repair or re-stretch carpet.

Why does carpet buckle?

Because it was loose or too much moisture or humidity let it stretch. A carpet installer re-stretches it.

How to stop carpet from fraying?

Trim loose strands level, never pull them, and have the edge bound (a rug) or secured under a transition strip (wall-to-wall). Avoid ordinary glue. We do not repair carpet.

How to repair a carpet edge?

An installer secures a wall-to-wall edge under a transition strip or re-seams it, and a rug repairer binds or overcasts a rug's edge. We clean carpet; we do not repair it.

How to clean carpet after water damage?

WATERFALL cleans carpet after a water leak once it has been dried out. Drying the structure is for a restoration specialist. If it was a clean-water leak, dry it fast, and a restoration specialist can advise.

How to clean flooded carpet?

Flooded carpet is a restoration job, not a cleaning one: floodwater is dirty, and carpet and pad it soaked are usually replaced. A water-damage restoration company decides what can be saved, and the EPA's flooding page explains the steps; once the water is out, we clean the carpet that is kept, and a photo tells us what we expect.

Can you fix flattened carpet under a desk chair?

Often, partly: brush the pile up or steam it lightly, then move the chair a few inches and use a chair mat. Crushed pile that is worn will not fully return.

How to patch a damaged carpet area?

Patching is an installer's repair. We do not patch carpet.
