Scotchgard on a couch or rug: what it does and does not do
A fabric protector such as Scotchgard makes a couch stain-resistant, not stain-proof: it goes on clean, fully dry fabric, gives you time to blot a spill and wears off with use and every wet cleaning. WATERFALL does not apply fabric protector, because it needs a fully dry surface and so cannot be done well during a cleaning; see fabric furniture cleaning for what the visit does instead, and the prices page for what is on the booking form. WATERFALL cleans couches at your home from $130: call (747) 214-6199.

What is Scotchgard fabric protection?
Scotchgard is a brand of fabric protector, and a fabric protector is a spray that coats upholstery fibers so that liquids bead up on the surface instead of soaking in at once. Other makers sell the same kind of product.
Is Scotchgard worth it after couch cleaning?
Often yes for a couch with children, pets, meals on it or light fabric, and often no for a piece that is rarely used or already in a performance fabric. Right after a cleaning is the sensible time, because protector belongs on clean, dry fibers; sprayed over soil, it holds the soil in.
It buys minutes to blot a spill, makes vacuuming lift more dry soil and helps the next cleaning; it does not stop wear, make the couch stain-proof or replace cleaning. WATERFALL does not apply it; instead a special product in the clean rinse water neutralises the cleaning solution and closes the fibers, so the furniture stays clean longer. Check the tag first: protector is not for X-coded fabric, and a hidden-spot test shows whether it darkens yours.
Does fabric protector make a couch stain-proof?
No. It makes the fabric stain-resistant for a time, not stain-proof. Oils, dye and a spill that is left to sit can still mark a protected fabric, and the coating wears off with use and with each wet cleaning.
Should I Scotchgard my cotton couch?
Cotton absorbs spills fast, so a protector helps it more than it helps a synthetic. Test a hidden spot first, because a protector can change how some fabrics look or feel, and follow the label on the can.
Can you protect new fabric from future stains?
Yes, by applying a protector to clean, dry fabric. Some new fabrics already carry a factory finish, so read the maker's care guide first to see what is recommended and what is not.
How is fabric protection applied?
Onto clean, fully dry fabric, in light, even coats, as the label says. A protector sprayed over dirt seals the dirt in, so the piece is cleaned and left to dry first, the room is ventilated and the coat is left to dry before anyone sits on it.
Is Scotchgard safe to spray on a couch with a baby and a cat in the house?
That is a question for the can's label, and the spraying, not the dry couch, is the moment to be careful: it is an aerosol you should not breathe, kept away from flames and pilot lights. Spray outdoors if the piece can go out; indoors, open the windows and keep the baby and the cat out of the room while you spray and until the fabric is fully dry and the smell has gone, overnight as a rule.
If a child or a pet breathes the spray, gets it in the eyes or licks wet fabric, call Poison Control or your vet. We make no safety claim about any protector.
Is Scotchgard on wall-to-wall carpet worth the money with a dog in the house?
For muddy paws, a dripping water bowl and fresh spills, often yes: they bead up long enough to blot. For accidents, much less: urine soaks through to the backing and the pad, where a coat on the fibers cannot reach, and a protector does nothing for odor, shedding or wear.
It is worth more on new, light or costly carpet than on old, worn carpet, and many new carpets already carry a factory stain treatment, so read the carpet's warranty first. Protector goes on after the carpet is cleaned and fully dry. WATERFALL cleans carpet at a fixed price per room, see carpet cleaning; we do not apply fabric protection.
How long does Scotchgard last on a couch?
On a couch in daily use, months rather than years: the coat wears first where people sit and rest their arms, and every wet cleaning removes part of it. Reapply as the can's label says, after each professional cleaning, and sooner if spills stop beading; to check, sprinkle a few drops of water on the seat, and if they soak in at once, the protection has gone.
Do you offer stain protection for upholstery?
No. WATERFALL does not apply fabric protector, because it needs a fully dry surface and so cannot be done well during a cleaning. Instead, a special product in the clean rinse water neutralises the cleaning solution and closes the fibers, so the furniture stays clean longer; we make no claim that it repels stains or water. The cleaning itself is shampoo and steam extraction with the best non-toxic products, safe for kids and pets.
