How to clean a white or light-colored couch
To clean a white or cream fabric couch, vacuum it, read the tag (W, S, W/S or X), test a hidden spot, then blot marks from the outside in with a white cloth and a little mild cleaner put on the cloth, not the couch; no bleach unless the care tag allows it, and take the moisture back out so no ring or yellow residue is left. A white sofa works with children and a dog when it is a tight-weave performance fabric tagged W or W/S with removable covers, or an off-white or textured weave. WATERFALL's couch cleaning works the shampoo in and extracts it from the whole piece; the cream sofas on this page are our own jobs, and prices are on the prices page. WATERFALL cleans couches at your home from $130: call (747) 214-6199.

What is the best way to clean a white fabric couch?
Vacuum, test, blot with a little mild cleaner on a white cloth and take the moisture back out, in the order below.
When the arms and seats have darkened all over, clean the whole couch, not a patch.
- read the tag (what W, S, W/S and X mean) and test a hidden spot; let it dry
- vacuum the seams and crevices
- put a little mild cleaner on a white cloth, not on the couch, and blot from the outside of the mark inward
- blot again with a cloth dampened with plain or distilled water to lift the soap
- dry fast with moving air; no bleach unless the care tag allows it, and no heat
How do I clean a white fabric dining chair?
Read the code under the seat first; most dining seats unscrew from below, so the fabric can be cleaned without wetting the wood. Vacuum, blot marks with a little mild soap in lukewarm water on a white cloth, then with a cloth dampened in plain water to take the soap out; do not soak the foam, and use no bleach unless the care tag allows it.
Clean the whole seat face, not one spot, or a bright patch shows. Dining chairs are priced per chair on chair cleaning.
Why does white upholstery turn yellow?
Four things cause it: body oils and soil that build up and darken the fabric, shampoo or cleaner left in the fibers, a stain that dries slowly and wicks up to the surface as a brown ring, and age or sunlight on the fiber itself.
The first three are cleaning problems and can be fixed by taking the dirt and the residue out. Yellowing of the fiber by age or sun cannot be reversed.
Are white sofas worth it with kids and a dog?
Yes, if the sofa is chosen for it. Look for a tightly woven performance fabric tagged W or W/S, so food, mud and accidents can be cleaned with water, removable covers with a spare set, and an off-white, ivory or textured weave, which hides marks between cleanings better than a flat bright white.
A white sofa still shows denim dye, body oils on the arms and paw marks within weeks, and claws snag loose weaves, so plan to vacuum weekly, blot at once and clean the whole piece when the arms darken. One WATERFALL client, Liz P., wrote: "They did a great job cleaning our off-white sofas."
What is different about cleaning a cream-colored sofa?
The steps are the same as for white, with three cream risks. Dark jeans rub blue dye into the seat, which needs a cleaner, not more water; over-wetting cotton or linen in cream fabric leaves a brown ring as it dries, so use little water and dry it fast; and washing one cushion cover changes its shade against the rest, so clean all the covers together or none.
The two cream sofas on this page, one with grey marks and one with dark marks on the seat, are before and after one WATERFALL cleaning.
How do you keep white fabric from yellowing when it is cleaned?
Use little water, take out everything you put in and dry the fabric quickly with open windows or a fan. Residue left behind and slow drying are what leave yellow rings, which is why extraction matters more than the cleaner itself.
Will my white couch look new again after cleaning?
It will look cleaner, and how much depends on the fabric and the marks: cleaning takes out dirt, and it does not undo sun fading, worn fabric or a dye stain. WATERFALL's own jobs on cream and light sofas are on this page and on the before and after page.

Questions and answers
Are white sofas hard to keep clean?
They show dirt first, but they clean well when the soil is out and no residue is left. Blot spills at once and keep a washable throw on the busiest seat.
How to keep a white couch clean?
Vacuum weekly, blot spills straight away and clean the whole piece when the arms start to darken. Light fabric shows dirt first.
How to get dirt out of a white couch?
Vacuum, blot with little water and take the moisture back out, then dry the piece fully. Cleaning the whole surface avoids a bright patch.
What to clean a white couch with?
A mild solution that the tag allows, applied lightly and blotted. Leftover residue is what makes light fabric look yellow.
How to clean a white fabric chair?
Check the code under the seat, vacuum, blot with mild soap in lukewarm water on a white cloth and rinse the soap out with a plain damp cloth. Do not soak the foam or use bleach, and clean the whole seat face.
Do you clean light-colored couches?
Yes. Cream and light sofas are on our list like any other; the pairs on this page are WATERFALL's own jobs.
Why are tiny marks easier to see on light-colored upholstery?
Because there is less color to hide them. The same marks on a darker fabric go unnoticed.
Can you clean white or ivory upholstery without yellowing it?
Yes, with little water, everything you put in taken out, and a quick dry. Residue and slow drying leave yellow rings.
How do I clean a cream colored sofa?
Vacuum, read the tag, test a hidden spot and blot with a little cleaner on a white cloth, then dry it fast so no brown ring forms. Clean all the cushion covers together so the shades match.
