Coffee, wine and food stains on a couch, carpet or rug
Food and drink stains come in three kinds: sugary and sticky, dye-colored, and fatty, and the first minutes with a white cloth and cool water matter for all three. WATERFALL's couch cleaning lifts what blotting leaves, and the prices page lists the price of the couch by its seats. WATERFALL cleans couches at your home from $130: call (747) 214-6199.

How do you get a coffee stain out of carpet, even the next morning?
An overnight coffee stain often still lightens, because coffee is a tannin dye that sets slowly in cool fibers; work through the steps below in order.
- Scrape or vacuum off anything dried on the surface.
- Mix the Carpet and Rug Institute's quarter teaspoon of liquid dish soap, with no bleach in it, in a cup of lukewarm water, and test it on a hidden spot.
- Dab it on with a white cloth and blot from the outside toward the center; do not scrub.
- Rinse by blotting with plain water, then press a folded towel on the spot and let it air-dry.
- If black coffee left a brown shadow, a little white vinegar in water, tested first, can lift it; milk and sugar need an extra rinse, because the residue turns sticky.
Can you remove red wine from a couch?
Often, when you act fast; red wine carries a strong dye and tannin, so blot it at once and do not rub. Press a white cloth on the wine until it stops picking up, dab with cool water, blot again and let the fabric dry with air moving over it.
An old wine mark is a dye stain, and it may lighten and not vanish. Text a photo to (747) 214-6199 and we tell you what we expect.
How do I get red wine out of carpet?
Blot at once and keep blotting, then dilute and rinse, in the order below; on wool or silk, stop after blotting and text a photo to (747) 214-6199.
Salt, baking soda and club soda are folk helpers that soak up some wine; none of them takes out the dye, and a powder left in the pile has to be vacuumed up fully.
- Blot at once with white paper towels, from the outside in, and switch to a fresh towel as it turns red.
- Mix the Carpet and Rug Institute's quarter teaspoon of liquid dish soap in a cup of lukewarm water, dab it on, wait a minute and blot; repeat while red still comes off.
- Rinse by blotting with a little plain water, then press a dry towel down hard.
- No rubbing, no hot water and no laundry or dishwasher detergent.
How can you remove red wine stains using common household items?
Cool water, a white cloth and a little dish soap do most of the work, and a mixture of one part white vinegar to two parts water can help on a stain that is still damp. Test it first, because vinegar can change some dyes, and rinse it out by blotting.
Do not use hot water, a steam iron or a hair dryer on a wine mark: heat sets dye in the fiber.
Can you remove red wine from upholstered dining chairs?
Yes in many cases, and the same blot-dilute-blot steps apply; the thing to watch is the water. A dining chair seat is a small cushion over padding, and a wet seat that dries slowly leaves a ring.
Blot dry, then use a fan. If the chairs are a set, see chair cleaning, where each chair has its own price.
Can you remove wine and food stains after a dinner party?
Yes, a professional can lift many of them within days or weeks, and the earlier the better. Blot what you can that evening; a dinner-party mix of wine, sauce, butter and sugar is hard to treat one item at a time, so cleaning the whole piece works better than chasing each spot.
Text a photo of the couch or chairs to (747) 214-6199 and we tell you what we expect before you book.
Can you remove coffee and tea stains from a couch?
Yes when they are fresh, and it gets harder as they age. Coffee and tea carry tannin, a brown dye, and milk and sugar make them sticky. Blot, dab with cool water and a drop of dish soap, blot again and dry.
How do you get a coffee stain out of a couch?
Blot the coffee, dab the spot with cool water and a little dish soap on a white cloth, rinse by blotting with plain water, and dry with air moving. Hot water sets the tannin, so keep it cool, and stop if the fabric starts to look wet through.
Check the tag under the cushions first: W means water-based cleaning, S means solvent only, W/S means either, and X means vacuum only (cleaning codes). On W or W/S fabric a few drops of mild dish soap in cool water is enough; on S fabric use no water and text a photo first, and X fabric is vacuum only.
How do you remove coffee stains from upholstery with common household items?
Dish soap in cool water is the safest, and a mixture of white vinegar and water can lift the brown after it. Test the vinegar on a hidden spot, rinse it out by blotting, and do not mix it with any other product.
If the tag says S, skip the water-based cleaners and text a photo of the tag to (747) 214-6199; we confirm how we clean it.
How do you get tea stains out of carpet?
Blot, dab with cool water and a little dish soap, rinse by blotting and weight a towel on the spot. Tea is pale when wet and darker when it dries, so judge the result when the carpet is dry, not when it is damp.

With a few drops of dish soap in cool water or a mixture of white vinegar and water, applied to a white cloth and blotted on. Rinse by blotting, never leave cleaner in the fabric, and keep heat away from the mark.
Does soda stain carpet?
It can: a dark or colored soda carries dye, and even a clear one leaves sugar that dries sticky and attracts dirt. Blot it, rinse the sugar out with cool water by blotting and weight a towel on the spot, because a carpet that still feels tacky when dry will darken faster than the carpet around it.
Can you remove spilled cocktails and soda from the carpet?
Usually, if they are blotted and rinsed soon: a cocktail brings sugar, alcohol and color, and the color is what lingers. Blot, rinse by blotting with cool water until the cloth comes up clean and dry with air moving over the spot.
Can you remove popcorn butter and soda stains from a couch?
Yes in many cases, but treat them in two steps: the butter is a grease and the soda is a sticky sugar. Absorb the butter with cornstarch or baking soda for a while and vacuum it off, then blot the soda out with cool water. The grease guide covers the first step.
Can you remove spilled drinks from a couch after a party?
Yes, and the sooner the better. Several drinks soaked into the cushions need more than blotting, because sugar and dye sit deep in the filling; cleaning the cushions one by one with an organic shampoo and steam extraction pulls them out, and the couch needs between 2 and 6 hours to dry depending on the weather.
Can you remove smoothie and juice stains from couch cushions?
Yes when they are fresh. Juice carries dye and sugar, and a smoothie with milk or yogurt adds protein that sours, so blot, rinse with cool water by blotting and dry well. A cushion that smells sour later was not rinsed through.
How do you remove a fresh cranberry juice stain from carpet?
Blot at once, rinse by blotting with cool water until the cloth comes up pale, then use a few drops of dish soap in cool water and rinse again. Cranberry is a strong dye, so once it dries it is much harder than it is wet.
How do you get chocolate out of carpet?
Let melted chocolate harden, lift it off with the edge of a spoon, then blot the rest with a few drops of dish soap in cool water, rinsing by blotting. Do not use hot water: it melts the fat deeper into the pile.
Why is chocolate harder to remove than most stains?
Because it is three stains at once: cocoa solids that color the fiber, fat that clings to it and sugar that stays sticky. A cleaner that lifts one of them leaves the others, which is why it takes a gentle soap, cool water and patience.
How do you get mustard out of carpet?
Lift the excess with a spoon, blot, and treat with a few drops of dish soap in cool water, rinsing by blotting. Avoid strong alkaline cleaners: they can turn mustard darker, and an old mustard stain may lighten without going.
Why are mustard stains so stubborn?
Because mustard is colored with turmeric, a strong yellow dye that bonds to many fibers, and because it is oily and acidic as well. That is why the first minutes matter more for mustard than for most stains.
Can I remove stains from carpet with baking soda?
Baking soda soaks up some moisture and odor, and it does not lift dye. Sprinkle it on a fresh wet spill, leave it for a while, vacuum it up fully and then treat the mark; a paste scrubbed into the pile roughens it and leaves a residue.
How do you clean a sticky couch?
Wipe it with a white cloth dampened in cool water with a drop of dish soap, rinse by blotting with a cloth dampened in plain water, and dry it. Stickiness is dried sugar, from juice, soda or candy, and it comes out with water; what does not rinse out is a job for steam extraction.
How do you get chocolate and frosting off fabric dining chairs?
Let soft chocolate and frosting firm up for a few minutes, lift them off with a spoon or a dull knife, and vacuum the crumbs. On W or W/S seats, dab a few drops of mild dish soap in cool water with a white cloth, from the outside in, then rinse by blotting with plain water and dry the seat with a fan.
No heat: it melts the fat in buttercream deeper into the padding, and a greasy shadow left behind gets the same soap again, not a stronger product; the grease guide covers the greasy part. Chairs from a party are easiest done as a set; see chair cleaning.
How do you care for food and beverage stains on rugs?
Blot at once, rinse with cool water by blotting, and keep the rug dry underneath. A rug that is soaked dries slowly and can bleed; see the guide to spot cleaning a rug and, for wool or Persian rugs, stop after blotting.
When is a food or drink stain a job for a professional?
When it is a dye stain that has dried, when a lot was spilled, when the fabric is S or X coded or light-colored, or when home attempts have left a ring. WATERFALL's steam extraction pulls out the spill and the cleaner with it, the visit takes about an hour for a typical couch, 1–2 hours for bigger pieces, and the price follows the piece, so a couch is priced by its seats on the prices page.
