How to get grease, oil and sunscreen out of a couch

Oil does not dissolve in water, so a grease stain needs two steps: absorb what is on top, then lift the rest with soap. WATERFALL's couch cleaning deals with the body oil that builds up across a whole cushion, and the prices page lists the price of the piece. WATERFALL cleans couches at your home from $130: call (747) 214-6199.

How do you get grease out of upholstery?

Blot off what you can, cover the spot with cornstarch or baking soda and leave it on for several minutes, longer for a big spill, so that it draws the oil up, then vacuum it off. On W or W/S fabric, put a few drops of clear dish soap in a cup of lukewarm water on a white cloth, dab from the outside in, turning to a clean part of the cloth as the grease transfers, then rinse by blotting with a cloth dampened with plain water and let it dry; keep heat off until the oil is gone.

If the tag says S, skip the water and text a photo of the tag to (747) 214-6199; we confirm how we clean it. The guide to the cleaning codes explains why.

How do you get an oil stain out of a sofa?

The same way: absorb first, then soap. Press, do not rub, because rubbing spreads the oil into a larger and fainter ring, and let each powder application sit before you vacuum it.

An oil stain looks darker than the oil it is: it is the oil that darkens the fabric, and the fabric lightens as the oil comes out, so judge the result when the fabric is dry.

Can you remove takeout and grease stains from a couch?

Often, if the grease is lifted in the first days. Takeout leaves oil, spice and sauce on the fabric, so absorb the grease, then clean the color with soap and cool water. Spice and sauce can leave a dye behind that grease treatment does not touch.

For a takeout spill, scrape off the food with a spoon, blot the oil with white paper towels, powder it, vacuum, then soap it as the tag allows, with the cleaner on the cloth and never on the cushion. Sauce and spice that stay after the oil is out are a dye; text a photo to (747) 214-6199 rather than scrubbing.

How do you get grease out of a fabric dining chair?

Scrape off the food, absorb the grease with cornstarch, vacuum it off and clean the seat with a few drops of dish soap in cool water. A dining chair seat sits over padding, so use a little liquid and dry it with a fan to avoid a ring.

If you have a set of chairs, see chair cleaning.

Can you remove cooking oil and food stains from carpet?

Usually when fresh. Absorb the oil with cornstarch or baking soda, vacuum it off, then clean the rest with dish soap in cool water and rinse by blotting. Cooking oil left on carpet attracts dirt, so an old oil mark often shows as a dark patch that cleaning lightens. Melted butter is the same grease: let it set, scrape it, then soap and rinse.

How do I get grease out of carpet when it has already dried?

Loosen it rather than scrub it: scrape off any hardened grease with a spoon or a dull knife and vacuum, then dab a non-flammable, dry-cleaning-type spot remover made for carpet onto a white cloth, never onto the carpet, and blot from the outside in. Without a solvent, use the Carpet and Rug Institute's mix of a quarter teaspoon of liquid dish soap in a cup of lukewarm water, and nothing stronger.

Rinse by blotting with plain water several times, because soap left in the pile turns into a dark patch, and blot until dry. Baking soda alone takes up surface oil, not oil that has set in the fiber. Ventilate when you use a solvent, keep it away from flames and off wool, and if a dark shadow stays after two rounds, text a photo to (747) 214-6199; carpet is priced per room, see prices.

Can you remove sunscreen and tanning oil stains from carpet?

Often, with the same absorb, soap and rinse steps. Some sunscreens leave a yellow or orange mark that stays after the oil is gone, so a faint color is the part that may remain.

Can sunscreen stains be removed from a light colored fabric couch?

Often, if you treat it soon and treat it as oil, because water alone spreads sunscreen. Blot off what you can with a dry white cloth, read the tag, and on W or W/S fabric dab with a few drops of clear dish soap in lukewarm water from the outside in, rinse by blotting and press dry towels on it.

Keep heat and sun off the spot until it is gone, because heat sets oily residue, and do not use chlorine bleach, which turns many light fabrics yellow. Some sunscreens leave a yellow or orange tint after the oil is out, and that part may stay; an S-coded or linen cushion is one to text a photo of first, and an X-coded one takes no liquid. See the guide to white and light upholstery.

Can you treat sunscreen or body oil stains on furniture?

Yes, and the sooner the better. Body oil and sunscreen soak in a little each day, so a light-colored couch on a sunny deck or by a pool collects them quickly. Cleaning the whole cushion works better than treating one patch.

Can you remove sweat and body oil stains from chairs?

Yes in many cases. Sweat and skin oil turn the arms and the seat darker over time, and a damp white cloth with a little dish soap lifts the surface layer. The deeper layer needs a cleaner that rinses out, which is what steam extraction does.

What is the best way to clean the greasy arms of an upholstered armchair?

Vacuum them, wipe them in sections with a white cloth dampened with cool water and a little dish soap, rinse by blotting and dry. Clean the whole arm from seam to seam, not just the dark patch, because a patch that is cleaned alone looks like a bright island.

On greasy arms, read the tag first (W or W/S for soap and water; S, text us; X, no liquid), test inside the arm where it does not show and keep the cloth barely damp, because a wet arm dries with a ring. Genuine leather arms need the maker's own product, and we do not clean genuine leather; faux leather we do clean.

Why does body oil build up on a couch?

Because skin, hair products and lotion transfer to the fabric every time someone sits, and oil attracts dust and holds it. It collects where bodies touch, which is the arms, the seat front and the top of the back cushion.

How do I get the greasy dark band off the back cushions where we rest our heads?

Often it lightens a good deal, and it may not vanish if it is old. The band is oil and hair product held in the fabric, so it needs a cleaner and an extraction that pulls the soil out and does not push it deeper.

To work on it at home, vacuum the cushion, then on W or W/S fabric dab the band from the outside in with a white cloth barely damp with a few drops of mild dish soap in lukewarm water, and follow with a cloth dampened with plain water; on S fabric text us first, and X fabric takes no liquid. Several light rounds are safer than one wet one, which leaves a ring and soaks the filling.

Clean the whole back cushion, not the band alone. A throw or a headrest cover is the easy way to slow it down.

When is a grease stain a job for a professional?

When it covers a cushion or a seat, is old, or sits on an S-coded or light-colored fabric. We come to your home: an organic shampoo is worked into the fabric and steam extraction pulls it out with the oil and dirt; the visit takes about an hour for a typical couch, 1–2 hours for bigger pieces. The price follows the piece, a couch by its seats, on the prices page; text a photo to (747) 214-6199 and we tell you what we expect.

Questions and answers

What is the best way to clean the arms of an upholstered chair?

Vacuum, then blot the arms with a lightly damp cloth and a mild solution suited to the tag. Clean the whole arm evenly, because arms darken from skin oil.

How to get grease out of upholstery?

Blot, absorb with a dry powder if the tag allows, then lift with a mild degreasing solution on a cloth. Test a hidden spot first.

How to get an oil stain out of a sofa?

Blot, absorb what you can and treat with a little mild soap solution. Old oil stains are harder, and extraction helps.

How to get oil out of the carpet?

Blot, absorb with a dry powder, then clean with mild soap and rinse by blotting. Do not use hot water.

How to get butter out of carpet?

Melted butter is grease: let it set, scrape off what you can, blot, then dab with the Carpet and Rug Institute's mix of a quarter teaspoon of liquid dish soap in a cup of lukewarm water on a white cloth. Rinse by blotting with plain water and dry; a shadow that stays needs a carpet-safe solvent or extraction.

How to get black grease stains out of carpet?

Blot carefully, treat with mild soap and cool water, and do not rub it in. Black grease may need extraction and can leave a shadow.

Can you remove the dark band on back cushions where heads rest?

Often, because it is body oil and soil. Cleaning the whole back cushion evens the color out.

Can I get a cooking oil stain out of a couch cushion with baking soda?

Partly: baking soda draws up fresh oil but rarely takes out the whole stain. Blot, cover the spot thickly, leave it for several minutes, vacuum, then dab with a little dish soap in lukewarm water if the tag says W or W/S, and rinse by blotting.
