How to get old and set-in stains out of a couch or carpet

An old stain is harder than a fresh one, not always impossible: what decides it is the kind of stain, the fiber, the heat it has met and what has been done to it. WATERFALL's fabric furniture cleaning works on the whole piece, and the prices page lists the price of the piece. WATERFALL cleans couches at your home from $130: call (747) 214-6199.

How do you get old stains out of a couch?

Slowly and in light rounds, and only after reading the cleaning code. Check the tag under the cushions first: W means water-based cleaning, S means solvent only, W/S means either, and X means vacuum only (cleaning codes). An old stain has set and dried into the filling, so expect it to lighten and possibly not vanish.

On W or W/S fabric, work in the order below. If the stain is oil, urine or ink, has reached the padding, or the fabric is velvet, silk, wool or unlabeled, stop and text a photo of the stain and the tag to (747) 214-6199 instead; we say what we expect before you book.

  • Vacuum the area and scrape off any dried residue with a spoon.
  • Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a cup of lukewarm water and test it on a hidden spot; let it dry and check for fading or bleeding.
  • Dampen a white cloth, never the cushion, and blot from the outside of the stain toward the center.
  • Blot with a second cloth dampened with plain water to rinse, then press a dry towel on it.
  • Let it air-dry with no hair dryer, heater or steam, judge it only when dry, and repeat once at most.

Can you remove old stains from my carpet?

Often they lighten, and some stay. Cleaning lifts soil, oil and sugar even from old stains; it does not lift dye that has set into the fiber, bleach or a burn. Carpet is priced per room, see prices.

Does coffee permanently stain carpet?

Not usually: a fresh coffee stain comes out in most cases, and an old one often leaves a tan shadow. Coffee is a tannin dye, and heat, milk and sugar make it harder, but extraction lifts much of it.

Why do some carpet stains become permanent?

A dye that has set into the fiber, heat, time, a fiber that takes dye, such as wool or nylon, and treatment that set the stain. Bleach and burns are permanent because they change the fiber itself, and hot water, scrubbing and strong cleaners turn many stains into ones that stay.

Fibers that resist dye, such as polyester and polypropylene, hold fewer stains. The guide to carpet fibers says what each fiber does.

Do certain carpets show stains more than others?

Yes: light colors, plain colors and cut-pile carpets show marks most, and darker, patterned and flecked ones hide them. The fiber matters too, since nylon and wool take dye and polyester does not, and a loose, plush pile catches spills deeper.

Can you fix a couch stain I already tried to clean?

Often, yes; tell us what you used. A stain that remains after a home attempt may be the original stain, cleaner residue, or a ring from the water, and these are treated differently. Stop adding products, let the spot dry, and text a photo with the names of what you used.

While you wait: if the spot is still damp, press clean white towels on it and do not rub; if it has dried as a dark ring or a sticky patch, that is often cleaner residue or wicking rather than the stain, and on W or W/S fabric a light blot of the spot and the area just around it with a barely damp cloth, pressed dry at once, can even it out. Add no vinegar, bleach, baking soda, alcohol or other stain product until you know the tag and what is already in the fabric, and keep heat off.

Can you take out a stain that somebody already tried to scrub?

Sometimes. Scrubbing roughens the fabric and drives the stain deeper, and heat or a strong cleaner can set it. We can lighten what is on the fiber, but a fabric that has been worn or bleached by scrubbing cannot be repaired, and we say so from the photo.

What should you do about residue left by DIY spotting chemicals or other cleaners?

Rinse it out: residue is sticky and attracts dirt, which is why a spot that was cleaned at home gets dirty again first. Blotting with cool water removes some of it, and steam extraction rinses the rest, which is what our method does.

Do not add another product over a residue. The first-response guide shows how to rinse by blotting.

Why do carpet stains reappear after cleaning?

Because the mark you saw was only the top of the stain. A spill that soaked through to the backing or pad stays there after the surface is clean, and as the carpet dries the moisture rises and carries it back to the tips of the fibers; this is wicking, and pet accidents and big spills do it most. The other two causes are soap or spot cleaner left in the pile, which is sticky and catches new dirt within days or weeks, and color that has actually changed, from bleach, dye or heat, which no cleaning reverses.

Let a cleaned spot dry fully before you judge it, press folded white towels on it with a weight while it dries and do not scrub. A fast dry, extraction that rinses and not scrubbing are the remedy. For pet stains see pet stains and odors.

What can I try on stubborn carpet stains?

Work through the steps below in order and stop at the one that works, with small amounts and several light rounds rather than one soaking.

Do not use laundry or dishwasher detergent, bleach or a stiff brush. A wool, silk or antique carpet, or a stain that has reached the pad or survived two rounds, is one to text a photo of to (747) 214-6199.

  • Vacuum dried matter, scoop solids and blot liquids with a white towel; do not scrub.
  • Test any cleaner on a hidden spot for color on the cloth or fading.
  • Use a carpet cleaner labeled for your fiber, or the Carpet and Rug Institute's mix of a quarter teaspoon of liquid dish soap in a cup of lukewarm water, on a white cloth, blotted from the outside in.
  • Rinse by blotting with plain water, then weight folded towels on the spot so that no residue is left to pull dirt back.
  • Match the stain: cold water for blood, an absorbent and a solvent remover for grease, the ink and paint guide for dyes and the pet urine guide for urine, with no heat.

Can I use a household stain remover between professional cleanings?

Yes, on small fresh marks, with a product made for the fabric, tested on a hidden spot and rinsed out. It is a way to keep a piece presentable between cleanings, not a substitute for them, and each product that is not rinsed out leaves residue.

What should I check before treating a stain on a new couch?

The store's warranty and care paperwork, before you use a cleaner of your own, because it may say what the fabric takes. We clean a new couch as we clean any couch; text a photo with the tag to (747) 214-6199 so that we can say what we expect.

How do you remove stubborn stains from vinyl upholstery?

Wipe with mild soapy water on a soft cloth and dry it, and avoid solvents and abrasive pads. We clean faux leather, which is often vinyl, but not genuine leather; the explainer says what each is and how the maker looks after it.

When is an old stain a job for a professional?

When the stain is more than a few days old, has been scrubbed or treated, covers a cushion or sits on a light fabric. We clean the whole piece at your home, an organic shampoo is worked in and steam extraction pulls it out with the dirt, and the price follows the piece on the prices page.

Questions and answers

How to get old stains out of a couch?

Cleaning the whole piece with extraction lifts many old dirt-based stains. Old dye or heat-set marks may only lighten.

How to remove tough stains from a fabric sofa?

Test a hidden spot, work the stain gently and extract. Repeated scrubbing makes it worse.

What makes a carpet stain permanent?

Dye in the spill, heat, bleach or time. Once the dye has set in the fiber, cleaning cannot lift it.

Does carpet material affect stain permanence?

Yes. Wool and nylon take dye more readily than polyester, so a spill can stay.

Can professional cleaning remove permanent stains?

Not if it is dye or damage. We tell you what we expect from a photo, and we promise nothing before.

Can you clean a new couch that already has a stain?

Yes, once it is in your home. A fresh stain on a new couch lifts best, so act soon.

How to remove stubborn vinyl upholstery stains?

WATERFALL cleans faux leather; text a photo of the piece to (747) 214-6199 and we confirm how we clean it. We do not clean genuine leather, so wipe it with mild soapy water and follow the maker's guide.

Why do old carpet stains come back?

Because the mark you saw was only the top of the stain: a spill that reached the backing or the pad wicks back up as the carpet dries. Soap left in the pile and color that has really changed, from bleach, dye or heat, are the other two causes.
