How to deodorize a couch or rug, and how odor removal works

Odor removal works by taking out what causes the smell: you find it, pretreat it, flush it out and dry the piece fast. WATERFALL's pet stain and odor page tells you what to send, and the prices page lists the price of each piece. WATERFALL treats pet urine and odor at your home for $30 a stain: call (747) 214-6199.

How do I deodorize a couch that smells stale without just covering it with perfume?

Remove the source instead of covering it with a fragrance, in the order below.

A spray that adds a scent can cover a smell for a few hours, and what is under it stays. A light smell may need only airing and baking soda; a deeper one needs a clean by extraction.

  • Lift the cushions and check the seams, the base, the underside and the wall behind for a spot or damp.
  • Read the cleaning code on the tag (what the codes mean).
  • Vacuum every surface, seams and underside included.
  • Leave baking soda on dry fabric for several hours, then vacuum it up.
  • Wash removable covers only as their own tag says.
  • Air the couch with a fan and open windows until it is fully dry.
  • Treat urine, vomit or food spots with an enzyme cleaner, and have a deep smell cleaned out by extraction.

How do I get a smell out of couch cushions that cannot be unzipped?

Clean them in place with as little liquid as possible. Vacuum the cushion on every side, leave baking soda on the fabric for several hours and vacuum it up; for a spot, use an upholstery cleaner the tag allows, blot instead of soaking, and stand the cushion on its edge in front of a fan to dry. Do not cut or force a sewn-in cover.

A smell that soaked into the foam needs the foam rinsed and the water pulled back out, which hand cleaning cannot do. Text a photo of the cushion and the tag to (747) 214-6199 and we tell you what we expect.

Do I need an enzyme cleaner or just a deodorizer for a smelly sofa?

An enzyme cleaner when the smell has an organic source: urine, vomit, milk, food or sweat. The enzymes break that down so it can be rinsed out, while a deodorizer covers or binds what it reaches, and a smell whose source is still in the foam comes back on a humid day.

A deodorizer, or just airing and baking soda, is enough when the sofa is clean and the smell is mild and stale. Enzyme cleaners are water-based, so use one only on a W or W/S tag, test a hidden spot and dry the cushion fast; a smell that returns after that needs a deep clean.

What is the best odor eliminator for a couch?

The one that matches the source. An enzyme cleaner works on organic smells such as urine, vomit and milk; baking soda absorbs a light surface smell; plain cool water and dish soap lift soil; and nothing helps if the source is still there.

Test any product on a hidden spot, check the fabric code and read the label. A product that says it works on everything is promising too much.

What is a deodorizer treatment for a couch?

A product applied to the fabric after cleaning to reduce or cover a smell. Some add a fragrance, which covers the smell, and some are made to bind or neutralize odor molecules, which works only on what it reaches.

The treatment helps after the source has been cleaned out and does nothing for a source left in the cushion. Our visit ends with a professional odor treatment after the spots are cleaned out, and pet urine gets enzyme products as a separate option, priced per stain; the pet stain and odor page says what to send.

Does upholstery cleaning include sanitizing and deodorizing?

WATERFALL's cleaning is an organic shampoo worked into the fabric and steam extraction pulling it out with the dirt. The visit has four steps: pre-vacuuming, shampooing, steam extraction, then stain and odor removal, where the remaining spots are treated with a specialised stain remover and scrubbed out and a professional odor treatment follows. It takes soil and the shampoo out of the fabric, and a smell that lives in that soil often goes with them. We make no health claim; for a health question, ask your doctor.

If a particular smell is why you ask, text a photo to (747) 214-6199 and we say what we expect.

Can upholstery cleaning remove odors?

Yes when the smell lives in dirt in the fabric, which is the usual case, and not always when it has soaked into the foam or when the source is still there. Taking out the soil takes out much of what the smell was attached to.

Pet urine in a cushion, smoke in the foam and mold are the cases where the result is least certain. We tell you what we expect from a photo before you book.

Does steam cleaning actually remove odors from a couch or only mask them?

It rinses the smell's source out rather than masking it: hot-water extraction flushes the fabric and pulls the dirty water back out, so the soil a smell lives in leaves the couch. It does not reach everything: urine that sank into the foam can be only partly flushed.

A smell can seem stronger while the couch is damp, since moisture wakes up what is in the fibers, and it is fairer to judge when the couch is dry; drying depends on the weather and on average takes between 2 and 6 hours. See the guide to problems after cleaning if it returns.

Which method is better for removing odors?

Methods that rinse and extract reach more than methods that only wipe or dry-clean, because they flush the fabric and take the water out with the dirt. A dry compound or a spray works on the surface.

The comparison of steam and dry cleaning sets them side by side. WATERFALL's method is shampoo and steam extraction, and we use the best non-toxic products, safe for kids and pets in every home.

How do enzymatic cleaners work?

Enzymes are proteins that break down particular organic substances, such as the proteins, fats and starches in urine, vomit, food and body soil, into smaller pieces that rinse out. They only work while they are wet and in contact, so the cleaner has to reach everything the stain reached and stay damp for the time on the label.

They do not work on something that is not organic, and strong cleaners such as bleach and ammonia-based products can stop them from working. Test on a hidden spot and rinse afterward.

What are the best tips for pre-treating odors?

Act early and in this order: remove the solids, blot, flush with cool water, treat the spot with an enzyme cleaner and keep it damp for the time on the label, then blot dry and dry fast with a fan. Work from the edge in and do not rub.

  • Test a hidden spot first, and read the cleaning code on the tag.
  • Do not use heat on protein stains such as blood, vomit and urine at the start.
  • Do not mix cleaners, and never mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar.
  • Stop after the second round and text a photo; more scrubbing turns a stain into a ring.

How do you deodorize carpet using natural remedies?

Sprinkle baking soda on dry carpet, leave it for several hours or overnight, and vacuum it slowly in several passes. For a light smell, lightly mist the carpet with a diluted mix of white vinegar and water after a hidden-spot test, and let it dry in moving air.

These help with a light surface smell. They do not reach urine in the pad or dirt deep in the pile, and a smell that returns needs cleaning. Keep humidity low and the windows open, since moisture is what brings smells back.

Does carpet cleaning remove odors?

From the pile, often, because the smell is attached to soil that cleaning removes. Carpet cleaning does not reach urine that sank into the pad, or moisture that is still coming from below.

Questions and answers

Will steam cleaning a couch get the smell out?

If the smell lives in the dirt, extraction takes it out with the dirt, and the last step of a WATERFALL visit is a professional odor treatment for what remains. A smell soaked into foam may stay.

What is the best way to deodorize a couch?

Find and take out the source, then dry the piece fast. A scent added before that covers the smell for a while and leaves the cause in place.

Does steam cleaning remove odors from a couch?

It often fades odors that sit in the dirt. A deep odor needs more than the surface.

How to clean a smelly sofa?

Vacuum, clean the whole piece and dry quickly. Find the source with the cushions off.

What is an enzyme cleaner for upholstery?

A cleaner with enzymes that break down organic soil such as urine; WATERFALL uses enzyme products for pet urine. Test it on a hidden spot first.

Does cleaning remove couch smell?

It removes the part that lives in the dirt, and often that is most of it. Deep foam smells may stay.

How to make your couch smell good naturally?

Air it, vacuum it and clean it. A scent on its own covers a smell; take the source out first.

Does baking soda really work for getting a smell out of a rug?

Partly: it absorbs a light surface smell from a dry pile, and it does not reach urine or damp in the backing or the floor under the rug. Sprinkle a thin layer on the dry rug, leave it several hours or overnight and vacuum slowly; on wool, silk or a valuable rug, test a hidden corner first. A smell that comes back is below the surface.
