Why carpet or a couch smells after cleaning, and other problems

Most problems after a cleaning come from moisture, residue or a stain that wicks up from below, and the first step is to let the piece dry fully before judging it. If you have a problem after a visit, text (747) 214-6199 with a photo; for the carpet side, see WATERFALL's carpet cleaning and the prices page. WATERFALL cleans carpet at your home from $60 a room: call (747) 214-6199.

Why does my couch smell after steam cleaning?

Because wet fabric smells, and the smell fades as it dries. Water wakes up what is in the fibers and the foam, so a couch can smell of its old dirt or of damp until the cushions are dry.

A smell that gets stronger as it dries, or turns musty, usually has one of four causes: the cushion took in more water than was pulled back out, it dried slowly in a closed, humid room, cleaner was left in the fabric, or urine, smoke or body oil sat deeper than the cleaning reached and came up with the moisture. Do not spray fragrance, vinegar or more water on it; dry it with the air moving and judge it when it is dry.

Dry it with the windows open and a fan on, and judge it when it is fully dry. If the smell is still there after that, it is coming from something in the cushion or the base, and a deeper clean is needed.

Why does my couch smell musty after cleaning?

Because the cushion or the foam is still damp inside. A fabric can feel dry on top while the foam holds water, and a damp foam smells musty.

Stand the cushions on edge, lower the humidity with the air conditioning or a dehumidifier, keep a gentle fan back from the fabric and give it more time. A musty smell that lasts a day or two after drying calls for a call to the company with a photo. See the guide to musty smells and mold.

Why does carpet smell after cleaning?

A wet carpet smells until it is dry, and old urine, pet smells and dirt in the pad can come up with the moisture. The pad holds water longest, so the smell can last as long as the pad is damp.

Ventilate and dry it, then judge. A smell that returns each time the air is humid means something below the surface; see the guide to pet urine in carpet and rugs.

Why does my rug smell worse after cleaning?

Because a wet rug smells of what it holds, and wool smells strongly when wet. Old urine or pet smells in the rug can also come up as the rug is wetted and the moisture carries them to the surface.

Dry it flat in moving air, turn it over when the top is dry so the back dries too, and judge it once it is completely dry. If it still smells, the source may be in the back or in the floor under it.

What if the smell comes back after cleaning?

It means the source was not all reached: it is in the foam, the pad, another spot, or the air is damp and wakes it. A smell that returns on humid days points to urine or moisture that is still below the surface.

Find the source with your nose and a black light, dry the piece fully, and tell the cleaner soon with a photo and the date. If you don't like something, we come back and redo it. Text (747) 214-6199.

How do you tell if the smell is still in the cushion?

Smell the cushion itself, with the cover off and the foam exposed, and compare it with the other cushions. A smell that is strong at one spot on the foam means the source is in the foam.

Check it when everything is dry, and on a humid day; the smell is strongest when the air is damp. A black light also shows old urine on a dry cushion in a dark room.

Does professional carpet cleaning cause mold?

Not by itself. Mold needs moisture that stays, and the EPA advises drying wet materials within a day or two; too much water, a thick pad, a humid room and no airflow are what let a carpet stay wet longer than that.

Open the windows, run fans and a dehumidifier, and tell the company if the carpet is still wet after a day or two. A couch is the same: our care note says not to use it or put the cushions back until everything is completely dry, so stand the cushions on edge and check the seams and the foam, not only the surface. If mold has grown, text a photo and we tell you what we expect; see the guide to musty smells and mold.

Why does carpet turn brown after cleaning?

Because soil and dyes from the backing or the pad move up with the water as the carpet dries and are left on the tips of the fibers; this is called browning. Natural fibers, jute backing and paper-based pad are the usual causes, and so is too much water and a slow dry.

Dry it fast, with open windows, the air conditioning or a dehumidifier. Brown that stays can often be extracted and rinsed again with less water and a faster dry.

Why do the same spots reappear after carpet cleaning?

The IICRC's carpet tip sheet says to let the carpet dry for at least 48 hours, then lay 6 to 10 layers of white paper towel on a spot that comes back, weigh them down and lift them after 6 to 8 hours. The cause is that the stain is below the surface and wicks up again as the carpet dries. Wicking is the movement of soil or a spill up the fiber with moisture, so a spot that was only cleaned on top comes back from the backing or the pad.

The fix is to treat the source with a little water and dry it fast, not to scrub the top. A spot that returns after you cleaned it yourself is wicking too, and the cause is usually too much cleaner or too much water.

To stop a spot that wicks, dry the area fast with open windows or a dehumidifier; once it is dry, mist it lightly with plain water, lay a folded white towel or several white paper towels on it with a weight on top, and change them as they pick up color. Do not soak it or add detergent. A brown or yellow tint on wool, jute or cotton can be browning instead; see above.

Why does my couch have brown stains after cleaning?

Because water carried the dirt or a stain from inside the cushion out to the edge of the wet area, where it dried as a brown ring. Over-wetting a spot and drying it slowly causes this on fabric, as it does on carpet.

Clean the whole cushion panel evenly, seam to seam, instead of one spot, and dry it fast. Text a photo to (747) 214-6199 with the time of the cleaning. If you don't like something, we come back and redo it.

Why does my carpet feel sticky after cleaning?

Because cleaner or shampoo was left in the fibers, and it dries to a sticky film that holds dirt and feels stiff under bare feet.

Let it dry, vacuum it slowly, then rinse a small area lightly with clean water and blot or extract it; do not add vinegar, soap or more shampoo. If the whole room is sticky after a visit, tell the cleaner.

  • Too much shampoo or spot cleaner.
  • A product mixed too strong.
  • Not enough rinse or extraction afterward.
  • Dish soap or laundry detergent used on carpet.

Why does my carpet get dirty so fast after cleaning?

Usually because residue left in the fibers attracts soil, or because the cleaning exposed traffic lanes that show next to the cleaner areas. Dirt tracked in on shoes does the rest.

Use mats at the doors, take shoes off, vacuum on a schedule and ask the company whether the carpet was rinsed. Cleaned carpet does not get dirty faster by itself.

Why does my carpet look worse after cleaning?

Wet carpet looks darker and patchy, and the pile lies flat and matted until it is dry and vacuumed. Judge the result when it is dry.

If it still looks worse when dry, the cause is often residue, wicking spots or traffic lanes that cleaning made visible. Send a photo to (747) 214-6199.

How do you restore velvet's texture after cleaning?

Let it dry fully, then brush it gently in one direction with a soft brush or a clean, dry cloth. Velvet pile lies flat when it is wet, and brushing lifts it back.

Do not brush it when damp, and do not press or rub it. A fabric steamer held well away from the fabric can lift a flattened patch on some velvets, after a test on a hidden spot; the guide to fabrics covers velvet.

Why is the fabric rough or stiff after cleaning?

Usually shampoo or hard water left in the fabric, or fibers that dried flat. Residue dries stiff and sticky.

Brush it gently when dry, vacuum it and ask the cleaner whether it was rinsed. For an S or X coded fabric, text a photo of the tag first and we confirm how we clean it.

Questions and answers

Why does my couch smell worse after steam cleaning?

Because wet fabric smells, and water wakes up what is in the fibers and the foam. The smell fades as the cushions dry; if it stays, text (747) 214-6199 with a photo.

Why did my carpet stain come back after cleaning?

Because the stain was below the surface and wicked up again as the carpet dried. Let it dry and blot it with a folded white towel; if it keeps coming back, text (747) 214-6199 with a photo. If you don't like something, we come back and redo it.

Can upholstery shrink or get watermarks after steam cleaning?

It can: cotton, linen, rayon or viscose and wool can shrink, and a watermark forms when water carries dirt, minerals or dye to the edge of a damp patch. Read the care tag and test a hidden spot first, and do not re-wet a ring yourself, which spreads it. For a fabric coded S or X, text a photo of the tag to (747) 214-6199 and we confirm how we clean it.

Can a wet couch grow mold after steam cleaning?

Yes, if the foam, the seams or the frame stay damp. The EPA advises drying wet materials within a day or two, so stand the cushions on edge, run fans and check the foam, not only the surface; text a photo if mold has grown and we tell you what we expect.

Why is my carpet dirtier after shampooing?

Usually because shampoo was left in the fibers and is attracting new dirt. Extraction after the shampoo prevents it.

Why does my carpet look dirtier after cleaning?

Wet carpet looks darker and patchy until it dries and is vacuumed. Judge the result when it is dry.

What to do if carpet smells after cleaning?

Let it dry fully with air moving. A smell that stays points to the pad or old urine below the surface.

Will my couch smell like chemicals after cleaning?

A wet couch smells of damp fabric and a little of the shampoo until it dries, and the smell fades as it dries with the air moving. If a strong smell stays once it is dry, text (747) 214-6199 with a photo. WATERFALL uses the best non-toxic products, safe for kids and pets.

What is wicking after carpet cleaning and how do I stop it?

Soil or a spill deep in the carpet rising up the fibers with the moisture as it dries. Dry it fast with fans, then weigh a folded white towel on the spot and change it until it stays clean.

Why does carpet get dirty faster after cleaning?

Usually residue left in the fibers attracts soil, or the cleaning showed traffic lanes beside the cleaner areas. Mats at the door slow it down.
