Odors and smells: questions answered

A smell comes from something that is still in the fabric, so the way to remove it is to find that thing, take it out and let the piece dry fast; a scent on its own covers a smell, and the source has to come out first. When the source is pet urine, WATERFALL's pet stain and odor page tells you what to send, and for the piece itself see couch cleaning, carpet cleaning and rug cleaning. WATERFALL treats pet urine and odor at your home for $30 a stain: call (747) 214-6199.

The guides

How do you get rid of odor in a couch?

Find what is causing it, take that out, then dry the couch quickly. Lift the cushions, check the seams, the underside and the base, vacuum, and treat the spot or clean the whole piece for the kind of smell it is: the guide to how odor removal works explains the steps, and a spray that adds a scent leaves the cause where it was.

Why does a couch or carpet smell?

Because something organic or damp is in it: pet urine, vomit, sweat and body oil, a spill that stayed wet, smoke residue or moisture that let mildew start. Fabric and foam hold smells for a long time, and a smell often grows stronger on a humid day because moisture wakes up what is in the fibers.

Can WATERFALL remove odors from my couch, rug or carpet?

We clean the whole piece at your home, after pets, a leak, a musty room or smoke too: an organic shampoo is worked into the fabric, steam extraction pulls it out with the dirt, and the remaining spots then get a stain remover and a professional odor treatment. A smell that lives in that dirt often fades with it. A smell that has soaked into foam or a carpet pad, or whose source is still there, may stay, so text a photo to (747) 214-6199 and we tell you what we expect before you book.

How much does odor removal cost?

The price is set by the piece: a couch by its seats, a dining chair, an armchair, a mattress and a rug each have a fixed price on the booking form, and carpet is priced per room. Treating pet urine with enzyme products is a separate option, priced per stain. The prices page lists them. The price you see is the price you pay: nothing is added when we arrive. Payment comes after the work.

Do you remove mold or smoke damage?

We clean furniture and carpet that smell musty or of smoke, and after a leak or a pest problem, and after mold, a flood or smoke, with no health claim and no promise that every trace goes. The guide to musty smells and mold and the guide to smoke smells say what you can do and when to call a specialist.

Questions and answers

Which smells does cleaning help with most?

Sweat, body oil, food and drink spills and recent pet accidents, because they sit in the dirt. Deep or old smells are less certain.

Does a spray fix a smell?

A scent on its own covers a smell for a while; the source has to come out first. Find it, take it out and let the piece dry.

Why do smells get stronger on a humid day?

Moisture wakes up what is in the fibers. A smell that returns on humid days usually means the source is still in the piece.

Will cleaning get a smell out for good?

A smell that lives in the dirt often fades when the dirt is taken out. A smell that has soaked into foam or a carpet pad, or whose source is still there, may stay, and we tell you what we expect before you book.

How can I get rid of musty odors in my carpet?

Find and fix the moisture, then clean the carpet and dry it fast with air moving. WATERFALL cleans carpet with a musty smell; growth on the back of the carpet or on the pad is a job for a specialist, and we clean the carpet after it.

What about bad smells that need professional cleaning?

A smell that stays after the piece has dried, or returns on humid days, points to a source below the surface. Text a photo and we tell you what we can do.

What should I send when I ask about a smell?

A photo of the whole piece and of the spot, where the smell is strongest, and what you think caused it. Text them to (747) 214-6199.

Do you treat pet odors?

WATERFALL, (747) 214-6199, treats pet stains and odors on couches, rugs and carpet as a separate option, priced per stain, with enzyme products. No method promises every smell comes out; see pet stains and odors.
