Pet urine in carpet and rugs: what works
Pet urine comes out of carpet when it is blotted, flushed with cool water and treated with an enzyme cleaner made for urine, left on for the time on its label; old urine that soaked into the backing, the padding or the subfloor is the part a surface clean misses, and it is why the smell comes back on humid days. WATERFALL's pet stain and odor page tells you what to send, and the prices page explains how rugs and carpet are priced. WATERFALL treats pet urine and odor at your home for $30 a stain: call (747) 214-6199.

How do you get pet urine out of carpet?
Blot up as much as you can, flush the spot with cool water, blot again, then use an enzyme cleaner made for pet urine and keep the carpet damp with it for the time on the label before blotting dry. Press a thick pad of white towels on the spot under your weight instead of rubbing; rubbing frays the pile and spreads the stain.
Urine goes down through the pile into the backing and the pad, so a stain that looks small on top is often larger below. Stop at the second round: if the smell is still there when the carpet is dry, the urine is in a layer your cleaning did not reach.
Does professional cleaning get old dog urine smell out of carpet?
Often it lowers it a lot, and it is not certain: the result depends on how deep the urine went. Urine that stayed in the pile comes out with a pre-treatment, a rinse and extraction; urine that reached the backing, the padding or the subfloor needs that layer treated, and a soaked pad is sometimes only fixed by replacing it.
Ask the cleaner to find every spot with a UV light before the work and to tell you whether the pad is affected, and be wary of one that only adds fragrance or promises that the smell goes before seeing the carpet. An old spot can still glow under UV light after a good cleaning, because aged urine bonds to the fiber like a dye, so the glow alone does not mean urine is left. Treating pet urine with enzyme products is a separate option, priced per stain; see prices, and text a photo of the spot and the room to (747) 214-6199 to ask about yours.
How do you get dog pee out of carpet?
The same way: blot, flush with cool water, treat with an enzyme cleaner, blot and dry. Dog urine is often a larger volume than cat urine, so it travels farther into the pad, and a big accident needs more flushing and more blotting than the top layer suggests.
Do not use ammonia-based cleaners. Urine contains ammonia, and a cleaner that smells of it can draw the dog back to the same place.
How do you get dog poop out of carpet?
Lift the solids with a bag or paper towel without pressing, scrape the rest off with the edge of a spoon, then blot with cool water and a few drops of dish soap and rinse by blotting. Pressing or rubbing drives it into the pile.
What is left is usually a stain and a smell: a brown mark that lightens in stages, and an enzyme cleaner for the smell. A soft or liquid mess spreads wider and deeper, so treat a larger area than the visible mark.
How do you find hidden pet urine stains in carpet?
With a UV (black) light at night: turn the lights off, hold the light close to the floor and scan slowly; dried urine glows a dull yellow-green. Mark each patch with painter's tape, and check where pets go back to: dogs near furniture legs, doorways and the middle of a room, cats along walls and in corners.
Some cleaning residues and other spills glow as well, so treat the black light as a guide to where to look and not as proof. Dried urine can also be found by touch: a patch that feels stiff or slightly damp on a humid day is worth marking. The glow shows the top of the spot; urine spreads wider in the padding below, and a cleaner can confirm it in the pad with a moisture probe.
Why is urine smell so hard to remove from carpet?
Because urine leaves salts and uric acid crystals that do not dissolve in plain water and that wake up when the air is humid, and because it soaks into the backing and the pad where a surface clean does not reach. The smell can disappear when the carpet is dry and return in damp weather.
Cleaning has to reach every layer the urine reached, with enough liquid to flush it and a way to take that liquid back out. The guide to how odor removal works explains what an enzyme cleaner does and does not do.
What kills the smell of pet urine?
An enzyme cleaner made for pet urine, used generously enough to reach as deep as the urine went, left for the time on its label and then dried completely; it breaks the urine down instead of covering it, and an old or large spot needs more than one round. Vinegar and baking soda can soften a light smell for a while, and a scented spray covers it until the scent fades.
Do not use ammonia-based cleaners, which smell like urine to a pet, never mix products, and keep an iron, a hair dryer or a home steamer off a urine spot until it is clean, since heat can set the stain and the smell. If the smell is back once the spot is dry, the urine is in the padding or the subfloor, beyond what a spray reaches; the guide to how odor removal works explains why.
Why does my carpet still smell like dog pee after cleaning?
Because the urine was not all in the part that was cleaned. A shampoo worked into the pile cleans the pile, and urine sitting in the pad or backing is left; wetting the carpet can also wake up old urine and make the smell stronger for a while.
If it smells worse right after cleaning, let the carpet dry fully with the windows open and a gentle fan kept back from the fabric, then judge again. A smell that is still there when the carpet is dry means a source below the surface or a spot that was missed, so find it with a black light before you clean again. The guide to problems after cleaning covers smells that come back.
The same thing happens when you shampoo a carpet yourself and it smells like pee afterwards: dried urine leaves salts that give off an ammonia-like smell when they get wet again, and a rental machine that leaves the pad too wet can add a musty smell on top. Dry it fully with fans, do not keep re-soaking it, then treat the source with an enzyme cleaner; a smell strongest at one spot or along a wall points to the pad.
Can you remove old pet stains from carpet and rugs?
Sometimes. An old stain has dried, taken hold in the fiber and often been cleaned over with a product that left residue, so it may lighten and not disappear, and the smell is easier to improve than the color. The age of the stain, the fiber and what was tried before decide the result.
Text a photo of the stain, in daylight, and of the room, to (747) 214-6199; we tell you what we expect before you book.
Can you remove stains and odors from rugs?
Often, and it depends on the rug. A rug is cleaned at your home on a drop cloth: the rug lies flat, an organic shampoo is worked in with a brush and steam extraction pulls it out. We clean rugs of every material except viscose, and the rug care hub covers the fibers.
We cannot promise a result for a particular stain, and a good cleaner will not either. Send a photo to (747) 214-6199 and we say what we expect.
How is cat urine cleaned out of a wool rug?
Carefully, because urine and the wrong product can change wool's dye for good. A professional checks whether the urine reached the foundation, the fringe or the pad under the rug, tests the dyes for bleeding, then rinses the spot with small amounts of cool to lukewarm water and a wool-safe cleaner, extracts it and dries the rug fast in moving air so the wool does not brown, shrink or stay damp.
Old cat urine can leave a color change that cleaning does not reverse, even when the smell goes. At home, blot with white towels and stop there: bleach, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia and an enzyme product not labeled safe for wool can bleed or strip the dye, so tell the cleaner what you have already used. WATERFALL cleans rugs at your home on a drop cloth, wool included; for urine on a wool rug, text a photo of the rug, its label and the spot to (747) 214-6199 and we tell you what we expect.
How do you get the smell out of a rug?
Find where the smell is strongest, which is usually a spot on the underside or one corner, then vacuum both sides, treat the spot with an enzyme cleaner if it is urine, and dry the rug in moving air. Sun fades dye, so dry a colored rug in a shaded place with the windows open.
If the rug is the source of the smell and not the floor under it, clean the whole rug and not only the spot; a spot treated alone often leaves a ring and a smell around it.
How do you remove urine from a jute rug?
With as little water as possible, and quickly. Jute is a plant fiber that absorbs liquid, holds it, and can brown or weaken when it stays wet, so blot, do not flood, and dry the rug fast with a fan.
Urine that has soaked into jute is often not fully removable, and washing it can darken the whole rug. The guide to jute, sisal, silk, viscose and shag rugs explains the fibers; send a photo to (747) 214-6199 before you try anything wet.
How do you stop a pet from re-marking after the carpet is cleaned?
By removing every trace of the smell, closing off the room while the carpet dries and managing the pet. Pets return to places that smell of urine, so a spot that is only cleaned on top draws them back.
A pet that suddenly urinates indoors is a reason to ask a vet, because the cause is sometimes medical. Take the pet out more often, reward the right spot and keep the cleaned area off limits until it is dry and no longer smells.
What is the best carpet cleaning for pet stains?
The one that reaches the layer the urine reached, uses enough water to flush and extracts it back out, and is honest about what it can do. Be wary of a company that promises a result before it has seen the carpet.
WATERFALL cleans carpet at your home with an organic shampoo and steam extraction, and carpet is priced per room, see prices. For pet stains, an enzyme treatment is a separate option, priced per stain; send a photo of the spot and of the room to (747) 214-6199 and we tell you what we expect. You pay after the work.
Questions and answers
Will professional carpet cleaning remove old dog urine odor?
Often it lowers it a lot, and it depends on how deep the urine went: urine in the pile rinses out with extraction, while urine in the padding or subfloor needs that layer treated or the pad replaced. WATERFALL, (747) 214-6199, treats pet urine as a separate option, priced per stain, with enzyme products, and no method promises every smell comes out.
How do professionals get cat urine out of a wool rug?
With small amounts of a wool-safe cleaner and cool water after a dye test, then extraction and fast drying; old urine may leave a color change that cleaning does not undo. Text a photo of the rug, its label and the spot to (747) 214-6199 and we confirm how we clean it.
How to get cat pee out of carpet?
Blot at once, then treat the spot with a cleaner made for urine and blot again. Do not use heat, which sets the stain.
How to clean an area rug from dog pee?
Blot, rinse by blotting with a little cool water, treat with a pet-urine cleaner suited to the fiber and dry with air moving. Do not use heat, which sets the stain.
Can steam cleaning remove pet urine?
Extraction can take much of it out of the carpet, and an old deep stain may remain. No method promises all of it.
How to get the smell out of a rug?
Find the source, take it out with little liquid and dry the rug fast. A rug that smells musty has a moisture problem to fix first.
How to get rid of a strong urine odor from carpet?
Blot, use a urine cleaner and dry. A strong, old odor has often reached the pad, which is beyond a surface clean.
How to remove old pet stains from carpet and rugs?
Old stains are harder, because urine has set in the fibers. WATERFALL treats pet urine as a separate option, priced per stain; text a photo and we tell you what we expect.
How to get dog poop out of carpet?
Remove the solid, blot, and treat with a mild soap solution; rinse by blotting and dry. Stubborn marks can be lightened by extraction.
I shampooed my carpet and now it smells like pee. What happened?
The water woke up old urine below the pile: dried urine leaves salts that smell again when they are wet, and the backing and pad under the spot were not rinsed out. Let the carpet dry fully with fans, then treat the spot with an enzyme cleaner. If it still smells once dry, the pad needs attention, and you can text a photo to (747) 214-6199.
