Dog smell, vomit and sweat odor in a couch or carpet
Dog smell, sweat and vomit are oils, moisture and protein in the fabric, and they fade when that is cleaned out and not covered. WATERFALL's pet stain and odor page says what to send, and the prices page lists the price of each piece. WATERFALL treats pet urine and odor at your home for $30 a stain: call (747) 214-6199.

How do you get dog smell out of a couch?
Vacuum the whole couch, wash what comes off, sprinkle baking soda on the fabric and leave it for several hours, then vacuum again. Dog smell is body oil, saliva and dander in the fabric, and it builds up where the dog lies, so the seat, arm and back cushion hold the most.
Home steps freshen a light smell. A smell that is still there after that is in the fabric and cushion, and the whole piece needs a deep clean: an organic shampoo worked in and steam extraction pulling it out, which we do at your home.
For a couch the dog sleeps on every day: keep a washable throw on its spot and wash it with the dog's bedding, read the cleaning code before any liquid, check the cushions for an old urine spot (a smell that comes back on humid days) and treat that spot with an enzyme cleaner if the tag allows water, without heat. Keep the dog off until the cushion is dry.
How do you get wet dog smell out of carpet?
Dry the carpet and get the moisture out, then vacuum slowly in several passes. Wet dog smell is damp fur oils sitting in the pile, and it returns whenever the carpet gets humid.
A sprinkle of baking soda left to sit and vacuumed up helps on a light smell. For a carpet that smells whenever the weather turns damp, cleaning by extraction takes out what the vacuum cannot; carpet is priced per room, see carpet cleaning and prices.
How do you get rid of wet dog smell after a trip to the dog beach?
Rinse the dog and dry the fur fully before it gets on the furniture, wash the covers and blankets it lay on, and vacuum the sand off the seats. Salt water and sand stay in fabric after the smell fades, and salt draws moisture.
Put a washable throw on the couch on beach days. When sand and the smell are in the cushions, see the guide to sand, salt and dust.
How do you remove vomit smell from a couch?
Lift off the solids, blot with cool water, work in a few drops of dish soap, rinse by blotting and treat the spot with an enzyme cleaner. Vomit is food protein and stomach acid, so heat and rubbing set it, and cool water and patience lift it.
Check the tag under the cushions first: W means water-based cleaning, S means solvent only, W/S means either, and X means vacuum only (cleaning codes). Microfiber's tag can read W, W/S or S, and on an S tag water leaves rings, so blot at home and text a photo of the tag to (747) 214-6199, since we clean S-coded fabric; on W or W/S microfiber, test a hidden spot first and blot. Dry the cushion with a fan; if the smell comes back as it dries, the vomit went into the padding and the cushion needs a deeper clean.
What is the best way to clean vomit from carpet?
The IICRC's tip sheet starts with removing as much solid matter as possible, using a wet/dry vacuum for the liquid, then blotting with a cloth dampened in clear water and, if a stain remains, with a few drops of liquid dish soap in a cup of water. Lift the solids, blot, rinse and dry, without heat or scrubbing, in the order below.
If someone was ill, wash your hands afterwards and follow your local health department's advice for the cleanup. If the vomit soaked into the pad, or the carpet is wool, the smell comes back as it dries and the carpet needs cleaning by extraction; carpet is priced per room, see prices.
- Put on gloves and keep children and pets away.
- Lift the solids with a spoon or a card without pressing them in.
- Blot with cool water and white towels from the edge in.
- Work in a few drops of dish soap in cool water, or an enzyme cleaner as its label says, after a hidden-spot test.
- Rinse by blotting with clean water, then dry the spot with a fan.
- No bleach, no steam and no hot water on a fresh spot.
Why does vomit smell stick to carpet so stubbornly?
Because it carries protein, fat and acid that soak into the pile, the backing and the pad, and it keeps smelling as long as any of it stays damp. Carpet is thick and takes a long time to dry, so the smell can last for days.
Avoid heat, steam on a fresh stain, rubbing, scented sprays that cover it and too much water that drives it down. Scrape, blot, rinse by blotting, use an enzyme cleaner and dry the area with a fan.
How do you get sweat smell out of a couch?
Sweat is salt, body oil and protein, and it collects on the headrest, seat and arms. Read the tag first: the vinegar-and-water blot below is for W or W/S fabric, S fabric takes a solvent and X only vacuuming. Blot the spot with cool water and a little diluted white vinegar on a W-coded fabric after a hidden-spot test, blot dry, and dry with a fan. Baking soda left on the fabric for several hours takes out a light smell.
A dark patch on the arm or headrest that returns is oil in the fabric, and a whole-cushion clean is the answer; the guide to old and set-in stains covers marks like that.
We do not clean smooth leather, so for a leather couch follow the maker's care instructions; faux leather and suede we do clean.
Can you clean a couch someone has been sleeping on?
Yes. A couch that is slept on takes in sweat, body oil, skin and hair, and it smells of it. We clean the cushions one by one at your home, work an organic shampoo into the fabric and pull it out with steam extraction; text a photo to (747) 214-6199 for a couch you are unsure of.
Can you remove stubborn stains and odors from a couch?
Often, and not always. A stubborn mark or smell is usually old, deep in the cushion or already scrubbed with something that left a residue, so it may lighten and fade without disappearing. The kind of fabric and the age decide.
We tell you what we expect from a photo before you book. The guide to which stains can be removed explains what changes the result.
Can you remove old pet stains and odors?
Sometimes. An old stain and its smell are harder than a fresh one, because the stain has taken hold in the fiber and the smell has sunk into the padding. Deep cleaning by extraction can lighten the stain and lift much of the odor, and a result is never certain.
Text a photo of the spot, in daylight, with a photo of the whole piece to (747) 214-6199, and we tell you what we can do before you book.
Do pet stains and odors affect health?
We make no health claim about pet stains or about cleaning them. What we can say is that urine, vomit and pet hair are organic material that sits in fabric and padding, which is why it is worth cleaning properly.
For general guidance on keeping the air in a home clean, read the EPA's indoor air quality pages; for any question about a person's health, ask a doctor.
Questions and answers
Can vomit smell be removed from a microfiber couch?
Usually, if you act before it soaks in: lift the solids, blot, use an enzyme cleaner only if the tag says W or W/S, and dry it fast. If the sour smell comes back as it dries, the vomit reached the foam and the cushion needs a deep clean.
Are enzyme cleaners or steam better for pet odor in carpet?
For a urine spot, an enzyme cleaner and cool water come first: the enzyme breaks the urine down, and heat on a fresh urine spot can set the stain and the smell. Extraction then rinses out what the enzyme loosened and pulls the liquid back out, and urine that reached the pad needs more than either.
How to get dog smell out of a couch?
Vacuum, wash the removable covers as their tags allow and clean the whole piece. The smell lives in oils and hair, and cleaning takes them out.
How to remove pet odor from a sofa?
Find where it is strongest, clean that area and the whole piece, and dry quickly. We look at a photo for deep odors.
How to remove wet dog smell from carpet?
Dry the carpet fast with air moving and clean the area. The smell is moisture waking up oils in the fibers.
How to remove the vomit smell from a couch?
Scrape off the solid, blot, clean with a mild solution and extract. Act before it dries.
Can you clean a couch my dog sleeps on every day?
Yes. A daily-use pet spot builds up oil and hair, and cleaning the whole couch evens the color.
Can you clean a couch after a sick kid or pet?
Yes, once you have removed the solids. Text a photo to (747) 214-6199 for a deep smell.
