How to get beach sand out of a couch, and salt air in LA
Sand, salt and dust come into LA homes on feet, towels and wind, and they are best taken out of couches and carpet before they wear the fabric. WATERFALL cleans at your home in the cities on the areas page, and the prices page lists the price of each piece. WATERFALL cleans carpet at your home from $60 a room: call (747) 214-6199.

How do I get sand out from between my couch cushions after a beach weekend?
Do it while everything is dry. Take the cushions off and shake or tap them outdoors, then vacuum the frame, the seams and the corners with the crevice tool. Brush stubborn grains along the seam toward the nozzle, wait a few minutes and repeat, since sand works back to the surface. Feather or down cushions get a soft brush, not strong suction, and spot-clean only once the sand is out.
Fine sand, crumbs and trail dust sit in the seams and the weave, and a clean by extraction pulls out what a vacuum leaves. See couch cleaning.
Can you remove beach sand buried deep in carpet?
Much of it, with several slow passes of a vacuum and then a clean by extraction; sand that has worked into the backing may not all come out. Sand is hard, and it cuts fibers as people walk on it, so it is worth removing before it wears the carpet.
Vacuum slowly in two directions, use the crevice tool at the edges, and have the carpet cleaned. Carpet is priced per room, see carpet cleaning.
Can you remove sand and pet hair after beach days?
Yes, with a vacuum first. A rubber broom or squeegee gathers pet hair from carpet and fabric, and the vacuum picks up the sand; extraction then rinses out what is left.
Shake towels and blankets outdoors, and keep a rinse spot for feet and paws near the door.
Can carpet cleaning remove sand and salt from beachside homes?
It removes salt and fine sand that dissolve or rinse out, and not sand that sits deep in the backing. Hot-water extraction rinses the fiber, which carries salt out with the water, and the vacuum takes the loose sand.
Salt left in carpet holds moisture and makes it feel damp in humid weather, which is one more reason to rinse it out. See carpet cleaning and the Santa Monica and Long Beach pages.
How can I keep sand out of my carpet between cleanings?
Stop it at the door with two mats: a coarse scraper mat outside and a fabric wiper mat inside, long enough that people take several steps on them.
Make it shoes off, shake or vacuum the mats weekly so they do not hand the sand back, sweep the hard floor at the entrance, rinse or brush pets' paws, and keep beach gear by an outside door. Vacuum the carpet nearest the door slowly and more often, since sand ground into the pile cuts the fibers.
How often should I clean the carpet if I live near the beach?
More often than a home without sand, and by what you see and feel, not by a date. Gritty feel underfoot, a dull entry and a salty, damp feel in humid weather are the signs.
The guide to how often to clean carpet gives the general rules, and homes with children, pets and beach traffic sit at the busy end.
How do I get sand out of upholstery seams?
With a crevice tool, a soft brush and patience. Brush along the seam to lift the sand, vacuum it up right away, and repeat with the cushions out.
Do not rub the sand across the fabric, since it scratches. A seam that stays gritty needs a clean of the whole piece.
Can you remove trail dust and debris from deep in the couch seams?
Mostly. Dust from a hike, crumbs and debris come out with a vacuum and a brush, and extraction pulls out what is fine and caked. Fine red or brown clay can tint light fabric and may leave a faint shadow.
How can I protect my couch from sand and wet swimsuits?
Put a washable throw or a large towel on the seat on beach days, and have everyone rinse off first. A wet swimsuit puts water, salt and sunscreen oil into the cushion, and sand follows.
Dry any damp spot with towels and a fan, and wash the throw often. The guide to grease and oil stains covers sunscreen marks.
Does salt air actually damage upholstery near the ocean?
Yes, mostly indirectly. Salt left in fabric draws moisture, so cushions stay damp and can smell musty; salt grit wears fibers the way fine sand does; and the hidden metal, such as springs, staples and nail heads, corrodes faster near the ocean and can rust through light fabric. Sun through coastal windows fades color on top of that, so vacuum often, keep the couch off cold outside walls and the balcony glass, use a breathable cover and run a dehumidifier or the air conditioning on damp days.
Our own observation is that humid air near the ocean slows drying, which is why drying depends on the weather. Cleaning rinses salt out of the fabric; see the guide to drying times.
Why does my couch feel damp near the balcony?
Because humid air, fog or condensation from the door or the glass reaches it. A couch near a balcony door, or against a cool outside wall, takes in moisture on damp mornings and nights.
Move it a little away from the glass, ventilate, run a dehumidifier or the air conditioning, and keep the cushions turned. If it smells musty, see the guide to musty smells and mold.
Does harbor dust affect upholstery?
Dust near ports, freeways and industrial streets settles on fabric as a gray film that dulls it and works into the weave. Regular vacuuming and cleaning take it off, and light fabrics show it first.
We clean at your home in the harbor cities as well; see the Long Beach page and the areas list.
Is your furniture feeling the effects of valley living?
Valley homes see fine dust, strong sun through the windows and dry heat. Dust builds up in fabric, sun fades color, and dry air with pets and wind brings more of both indoors.
Vacuum the couch weekly, keep it out of direct sun if you can, and clean it on a schedule. We come to the valley: see Van Nuys, Encino, Sherman Oaks and North Hollywood.
Can professional carpet cleaning remove dirt from garage-adjacent rooms?
Dirt, yes; oil, in part. Rooms next to a garage collect tracked-in grime, dust and oily soil, and extraction lifts much of it, while an old oil stain may only lighten.
Use a mat at the door and vacuum the entry more often. The guide to grease and oil stains covers oily marks.
Questions and answers
How do I get sand out from between couch cushions?
Take the cushions off, shake them outdoors, then vacuum the seams, corners and base with the crevice tool. Sand collects where the cushion meets the frame.
Can upholstery cleaning help with salt air and beach residue?
It takes out the salt and fine sand that rinse out, and not sand that is deep in the backing. Extraction rinses the fiber.
Will the smell come back when it's humid?
It can, if moisture or an old source sits below the surface: damp foam, old urine or a wet pad smell again when the sea air is humid. Dry the piece fully, run a dehumidifier on damp days, and see problems after cleaning if it keeps returning.
Is coastal living taking a toll on your upholstery?
It can, mostly through damp air and sun: humid sea air slows drying and can leave cushions smelling musty, and strong light through coastal windows fades color. Keep the couch out of direct sun, vacuum often and run a dehumidifier on damp days.
Why does my couch feel damp near the balcony?
Humid air, fog or condensation from the door or glass reaches it. A couch against a cool outside wall takes in moisture on damp mornings.

Dust near ports and freeways settles as a gray film that dulls fabric. Regular vacuuming and cleaning take it off, and light fabrics show it first.
How can I keep sand out of my carpet between cleanings?
Stop it at the door: a mat outside and one inside, shoes off and a place to shake out towels. Brush feet and shake out towels before they come in.
How often should I clean the carpet if I live near the beach?
More often than a home without sand, judged by what you see and feel. A gritty feel and a dull entry are the signs.
Can you remove sand and pet hair after beach days?
Yes, vacuum first, then clean by extraction. A rubber broom gathers pet hair.
